Huge cargo ship ramshacks chic mansion on the Bosphorus

A huge cargo ship sailed a chic mansion on the banks of the Bosporus in Istanbul after the helm got stuck.

That is what Turkish media report. The 225-meter-long cargo ship was heading straight for the house. The ship was on its way from Egypt to Ukraine.

There are no reports of injuries or environmental damage. The accident happened close to Fatih Sultan Mehmet Bridge on the Asian side of the city, where the coast is dotted with chic mansions from Ottoman times.

According to experts, the strait is one of the most risky waterways in the world. Every year more than 50,000 ships pass the route, including tankers with highly inflammable oil. The Bosphorus is an S-shaped waterway with sharp bends and changing currents that are a challenge for shipping.
