Historic meeting between Pope and Patriarch

Pope Francis meets Friday in Cuba, the patriarch of the Russian Orthodox Church, Kirill.

The meeting has great historical significance. It is not known whether the meeting will lead to a joint declaration, but the mere fact that the hostilities be buried after a thousand years, is seen as very interesting.

Two thirds of the Orthodox Christians in the world is Russian. In the past popes tried to approach, especially Pope John Paul II, but in the aftermath of the Cold War there was much distrust in Moscow.

The meeting takes place at the Havana airport.
