German police arrested traffickers

German police have broken up a gang that smuggled Syrian asylum seekers to Germany.

The main suspect, a 48-year-old German, and six accomplices were arrested in raids in Wuppertal and elsewhere in the west of Germany. They smuggled the Syrians in caravans, minibuses and cars via Hungary and Austria to Germany.

Last year, more than a million refugees from the Middle East and North Africa to Germany. Many of them traveled through the so-called Balkan route. Now that is closed, the flow of refugees dried up.
