German minister visits memorial Armenia

German Foreign Minister Frank-Walter Steinmeier on Thursday visited the memorial to the genocide in the Armenian capital Yerevan.

The recognition by the Bundestag of the massacres of Armenians in the Ottoman Empire in 1915-1916 as genocide, the relations of Germany with Turkey has recently been put under pressure. Steinmeier called for renewed efforts to achieve reconciliation. He pleaded for a historical analysis of the atrocities which,, as much as possible 'should be done in consultation with Armenia and Turkey. Turkey, as the successor of the Ottoman Empire, has always rejected the characterization of the massacres as genocide.

After his visit to Armenia, the Minister travels to neighboring Azerbaijan. Also, there are efforts for peace on the territory of Nagorno-Karabakh front. The area is disputed between Armenia and Azerbaijan. Germany is currently implementing the chairmanship of the Organization for Security and Co-operation in Europe (OSCE).
