French fishermen block the port of Calais

French fishermen raised a blockade on Thursday for the port of the northern city of Calais.

The French newspaper La Voix du Nord reports that there are no ferries sailing between Calais and Dover at the moment. Fishermen from Calais receive support from colleagues from Dunkirk at the blockade.

French fishermen are fiercely opposed to pulse fishing. In doing so, fish are startled with electric impulses and thus driven into the net. They consider it an unfair form of competition for smaller fishermen.

More than a week ago, the European Parliament spoke out against a ban on pulse fishing. That is a heavy blow for Dutch pulse fishermen, who have invested a lot in technology.
