Former President South Korea gets 24 years in prison

Former South Korean president Park Geun-hye (66) has been sentenced to 24 years in prison.

Prosecutors had demanded 30 years in prison against the former president, who was deposed last year after months of protests. They accuse Park of abuse of power, among other things.

A court sentenced confidant Choi to 20 years in prison earlier this year. Her influence on the then president caused a political scandal in 2016. Choi, with the approval of Park, would have interfered with state affairs, although the woman had no official function within the government.
