Flemish mayors often threatened

Mayors of municipalities in Flanders are increasingly face physical and verbal threats.

When asked whether they have ever been faced with verbal and / or physical violence, 48 percent answered in the affirmative. One said to have taken a beating in the first six citizens. Some have asked mayor or have police monitoring during council meetings plainclothes agents keep an eye on.

The Flemish Cities and Municipalities is considering to appoint a counselor for mayors in need. There will also be possibly teach a course for mayors dealing with angry and aggressive residents.
