Finnish former President Koivisto passed away

Mauno Koivisto, Finland's first left-wing president, passed away at the age of 93.

Koivisto was born in 1923 and was the son of a ship timmerman. He became the ninth president of the Scandinavian country in 1982 and fulfilled this function two terms of six years.

He led his country through the economic crisis that arose after the collapse of the neighboring Soviet Union, and applied to Finland's application to become a member of the European Union in 1992.
