EU wants web of connection with Balkan

The six Balkan countries that want to become members of the EU are not ready for that yet, but must keep an eye on accession.

The Heads of Government of the EU countries write that in the final declaration of their summit on the Balkans in Sofia. The leaders of Serbia, Montenegro, Bosnia, Kosovo, Macedonia and Albania can also agree with the text.

Europe wants to prevent these countries from entering the sphere of influence of Turkey, Russia or China and is therefore determined to strengthen cooperation at all levels. A lot remains to be done in the field of corruption and crime prevention. They also have to resolve their mutual conflicts 'definitively'.

Negotiations have been under way for several years with Serbia and Montenegro. EU leaders have to decide next month whether Macedonia and Albania can also make that move.
