EU knowledge center in violation of food fraud

The European Commission establishes a knowledge center to promote food quality in the EU and to combat food fraud more harshly.

A network of experts will collect and share current scientific knowledge. There will be an early warning system for abuses in one or more Member States. 'Food fraud is a transnational criminal activity and the EU therefore has a clear role to play,' says EU Commissioner Tibor Navracsics, who is responsible for the knowledge center.

Concern about food fraud and quality undermines consumer confidence and damages the entire food supply chain in Europe, from farmers to retailers, according to the committee. The knowledge center will be launched on Tuesday in Strasbourg.
