EU imposes arms embargo on Venezuela

The European Union prohibits the supply of weapons to Venezuela, as well as other items that can be used to suppress the population.

The Venezuelan left-wing populist Nicolás Maduro has worried Europe for a long time. The arms embargo and the threat of economic sanctions must prompt the regime to restore democracy, to negotiate with the opposition and to declare elections. The union also calls for the release of political prisoners.

Maduro has put an end to parliament by setting up a constitutional meeting convened by the opposition in August. As an organ of state, it took over the duties of parliament.

The oily South American country is on the verge of bankruptcy. Numerous basic needs are not available.
