Erdogan promises end emergency

The Turkish president Erdogan will re-establish the state of emergency once as president.

The state of emergency has been in effect since a failed military coup in July 2016. It is extended by three months each time. The state of emergency virtually eliminates parliament and the most essential legal protection of citizens.

Erdogan announces laws by decree thanks to the state of emergency. More than 160 000 people have been arrested in the context of the state of emergency and a similar number of civil servants have been made redundant.

The intention is that the new elections will also give Turkey a different political system. Then the president is a powerful leader of the government. Earlier, the Turkish president was mainly a ceremonial figure and the prime minister led the government.
