Cyril Ramaphosa elected as new leader ANC

Cyril Ramaphosa was chosen by his party members as the new leader of the ANC, the largest political party in South Africa.

He defeated six opposition candidates in the elections of which Nkosazana Dlamini-Zuma, the former wife of current president Jacob Zuma, was his main opponent.

There must be a new ANC leader because Jacob Zuma (75), the current party leader and president, has to retire by law in 2019 after two terms of office. Zuma is controversial. His political and administrative career has been characterized for years by a series of fraud and corruption scandals.
