Council of Europe can not intervene in Turkey

The Council of Europe says no opportunities to remove the outcome of the Turkish referendum.

The verdict is a disappointment for the Turkish opposition, which is considering submitting the referendum to the European Court of Human Rights. The court did not pronounce judgment in such a case earlier.

Jagland warned that reintroducing the death penalty by Turkey would not be compatible with the membership of the Council of Europe, where Turkey has been joining since 1950. 'There can not be a compromise. Otherwise, the European continent is undermining, 'said the Norwegian.

The dozens of member councils are not part of the EU but aim to promote democracy and human rights in Europe. That is in tune with the intention of Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan to put the death penalty back on the political agenda.
