Code orange for cluster Chilean volcanoes

A cluster of volcanoes, known as Nevados de Chillán, in southern Chile can erupt within 'a few days or weeks'.

The Onemi agency issued code orange, the second-highest alarm for volcanoes. The office previously warned that the cluster could erupt within 'weeks or months'. The group of volcanoes is located in the Andes mountains at about 380 kilometers south of the capital Santiago and has shown an increase in activity in recent months.

The nearest cities are in the western part of Nevados de Chillán. There are also some popular ski areas there. The Chilean army is ready to assist with evacuations in the event of an eruption.

The volcanic cluster, with seventeen craters, was last active in 2016. The biggest eruption occurred as far as known in 1973. Chile has the second largest and most active volcanic chain in the world after Indonesia.
