Coalition Agreement Iceland approved

More than two months after the elections Iceland gets new government.

The leader of the Independence Party Bjarni Benediktsson, will be prime minister of the new government, presented Tuesday during the day. The parties have agreed that a referendum on possible accession to the European Union, although the Independence Party is opposed to EU membership.

The three parties together occupy 32 of the 63 seats in parliament. A previous attempt to reach a coalition failed in November, but because the Greens and the Pirate Party also could not agree, the Independence Party was again a formation commission.

Iceland early in 2009. EU membership, one year after it had been almost bankrupt by a banking crisis. It suspended the negotiations on that later on.
