Chinese economy overestimated 12%

The Chinese economy is 12% smaller than the country predicts in official figures, and GDP growth has been overestimated by an average of two percentage points in recent years.

There has been skepticism about the official growth figures of the Chinese economy for some time, but according to Brookings it has now been shown that the figures for the years 2008-2016 are not correct. According to the researchers, this has to do with the way in which China has set up its economy: everything is geared to growth. Local authorities that can provide good growth figures are promised for this. That gives them every reason to imagine things brighter than they are.
