Child marriages no longer recognized in Sweden

Sweden does not want to recognize child marriages that have taken place abroad.

Sweden had previously banned child marriages in Sweden, but couples who were married abroad were still recognized. Even when rules were tightened, the number of child marriages rose in Sweden because there were gaps in the legislation that made such marriages legal. As soon as the law starts on January 1, 2019, it will no longer go, the Swedish government hopes.

In the Netherlands, laws were passed in 2015, so that child marriages that have taken place both inside and outside the Netherlands are not recognized. Action groups, however, argue that it still occurs, especially among closed communities, such as the Syrian, Pakistani and Roma communities.
