Burundi promises to release prisoners

The Government of Burundi has promised to release 2000 prisoners.

The African country is struggling with political turmoil and violence since Nkurunziza in April decided to run for a third term. The violence killed more than four hundred people dead and 240 000 people fled their homes.

According to the opposition Nkurunziza has fulfilled the constitutional limit of two terms of office. The president and his supporters say Nkurunziza's first term did not count, because when he was not elected by the people, but was appointed by parliament.
