Belgian food maggots clean wounds

Larvae therapy, a treatment in which maggots are used to make it difficult to heal wounds, may be used again in Belgium.

In the therapy fifty larvae of the flesh fly green is put into a type of tea bag and placed on the wound. The animals eat the dead tissue and spread on an enzyme that has a dissolving action. On average, it takes four days for the wound is clean.

The maggots are mainly used to prevent amputation in patients who no longer respond to antibiotics and diabetics. The FAMHP let the therapy as unregistered drug, making the treatment is not reimbursed.
