Babis appointed Prime Minister Czech Republic

Billionaire Andrej Babis has been sworn in as the new prime minister of the Czech Republic.

Babis made his oath of office on Wednesday in the presence of President Milos Zeman. In the parliamentary election in October, the protest party ANO (Yes) of the businessman received 29.6 percent of the votes: considerably more than the second party of the country, which received the support of more than 11 percent of voters.

It is still unclear whether the prime minister can count on sufficient support in a vote of confidence in parliament in January. ANO has 78 parliamentarians in the 200-seat lower house. So far, none of the other parties has pledged support. Babis does not have to immediately resign if he loses the vote. He may stay on until a solution is found.
