Austria clears away for gay marriage

Same-sex partners can marry in Austria from 2019.

At the request of two women, the court adopted a law from 2009, which stipulates that gay couples may only enter into registered partnerships. Wedding was not allowed. However, the distinction between a registered partnership and a marriage can not be maintained without discriminating against such statements, according to the court in a statement.

Austrian partners with the same sex can get married by the decision with effect from 1 January 2019. Interest organization Homosexuellen Initiative Wien (HOSI) welcomed the decision. ' We are very happy, 'said HOSI president Christian Högl.
