Attacker Vienna had radical sympathies

The man who put on a military in Vienna had radical-Islamic sympathies.

The 26-year-old man attacked a soldier on Sunday outside the home of the Iranian ambassador. 'The attacker stabbed the soldier several times. He was only saved by his stab proof vest ', said a police spokesman on Monday. The soldier subsequently shot his attacker.

The authorities find it too early to make statements about the drives of the attacker, an Austrian of Egyptian descent. 'We only found that he was sympathetic to political Islam,' said Director General of Public Security Michaela Kardeis on Tuesday.

Kardeis emphatically emphasized the use of the term 'sympathy' because it is still unclear whether the perpetrator was a jihadist or radicalized Muslim.
