Armenian leader away after mass demonstrations

The Armenian leader Serzj Sarkisian has announced his departure after large-scale protests.

Sarkisian was the President of Armenia for ten years, which borders Turkey. The parliament appointed him prime minister earlier this month. It has gained more powers, while the power of the president has been reduced. Sarkisian therefore remained the most powerful person in the country.

Opponents accused Sarkisian, among other things, that he tried to stay in power for too long. He initially refused to take a step back, but returned on Monday. 'I renounce the leadership of this country and the post of Prime Minister of Armenia,' he said in a statement.
