Anti-corruption chief Romania not fired

Romanian President Klaus Iohannis has rejected a request to dismiss head of DNA anti-corruption service.

Iohannis said that Toader's arguments did not convince him. In this way the president thwarted the government, which wanted to get rid of Kövesi. The president must give permission to be able to send the DNA head away prematurely. The Minister of Justice wrote on Facebook that the government will challenge the decision at the Constitutional Court.

The anti-corruption service continued under the leadership of Kövesi many prominent Romanians. These include politicians and administrators of government institutions. Critics accuse the government of trying to curb the approach to corruption by dismissing Kövesi.
