Android on 2 billion devices

More than two billion devices worldwide now run on the Android operating system.

The company behind Android was set up in 2003. Google bought it for $ 50 million two years later. In 2008, the first device came with Android on the market. The operating system is now in its seventh version, Nougat. The successor, who starts with an O, was released on Wednesday as a beta. This fall, the new Android version should be on the market.

Chrome, Play, Gmail, Maps, Search, and YouTube have more than a billion users. According to Pichai, the Google Drive has 800 million users and Google Photos 500 million.

Google also announced a light version of Android. Android Go is designed for the cheapest phones, which have less than 1GB of memory. That should bring more Android users. The operating system includes custom versions of, for example, YouTube and Chrome, which use less data and less memory.
