Again delay Surinamese 8 December process

The meeting scheduled for Tuesday of the 8 December trial in Suriname will not take place.

On the role of Tuesday were the cases of the suspects Stephanus Dendoe, Ernst Gefferie and Iwan Dijksteel. The Public Prosecution Service has demanded 20 years' imprisonment against all three. Their lawyer Irwin Kanhai was on the move to hold his plea. These things were already on the 31st of January, but Kanhai asked for postponement because he needed more time.

The December 8 case is based on the murder of fifteen prominent Surinamese in December 1982. The main suspect in the case is the current president of Suriname, Desi Bouterse. The Public Prosecution Service has also demanded 20 years against him.

According to Hugo Essed, lawyer of the families of the victims, the postponement has to do with the busy activities of the judges. There is nothing special about it, he said to the ANP. 'I have not heard anything officially. The postponement of the case in January resulted in extra work for the judges and the clerk. '
