Accordion legend Marcel Azzola (91) died

French accordion player Marcel Azzola, who accompanied the greatest French chanson, died on Monday at the age of 91.

Marcel Azzola accompanied Yves Montant, Georges Brassens, Barbara, Édith Piaf, Juliette Gréco and Jacques Brel, among others. He is the 'Marcel' from the live recording of 'Vesoul' from 1968, which Brel encouraged with 'chauffe, Marcel, chauffe!'.

He also recorded film music, including for Jacques Tati ('Mon Oncle', 'Playtime'). Azzola has also been active as a jazz musician. He can be heard on 'Chez Toots', the record from 1998 by harmonica player Toots Thielemans.
