rome - collaborate Netherlands and six other EU countries to develop two supercomputers in Europe. They want to catch up with China, Japan and the US signed Thursday in Rome a statement on this.

The so-called exascalecomputers with thousands of processors should be more than a hundred times faster than the fastest computers now in Europe, says EU Commissioner Andrus Ansip (Digital Economy). Scientists, businesses and governments across the EU may use the new machines, which should be operational from 2022.

The European Commission compares the project to develop the Airbus and Galileo satellite navigation project. Besides the Netherlands put France, Germany, Italy, Portugal, Spain and Luxembourg signed. Ansip encourages other EU countries to join.
