Egypt cut jobs from NGOs

World May 29, 2017 22:42

cairo - Egypt has published a new law Monday, which strongly clogs the work of non-governmental organizations. NGOs may only do social or development work and must adhere to the state's 'development plan.' Donations of around 500 euros or more must be notified and approved in advance.

The estimated 46,000 NGOs in Egypt have a year to meet the new conditions. Otherwise they will be dissolved by the judge. Breach of the law imposes a maximum of five years imprisonment or 50,000 euros fine. Domestic and foreign groups may not conduct political activities and do nothing to endanger national security, public order, public morals or public health.

Human rights activists say that the new law makes NGOs practically impossible. The government accuses human rights groups for long periods of money from abroad to create disorder.
